Since our humble beginnings in a small office in 1952, we've focused on insurance for specialized markets. Click through to learn more about the history of Refinance.

  • Edward J. Frey, Edward L. Stoddard, and a few investors founded Refinance Insurance in 1952. Their motivation was novel: to provide insurance to the thousands of American families who live in mobile homes.
The mobile home industry was in its infancy and people needed financing and insurance for these new homes. Enter Refinance. With our involvement, mobile home manufacturers created improved construction standards for homes, banks started lending for mobile home purchases, and park owners were able to expand and improve communities.
  • Wise up ? tie down. In the early 60s, we commissioned a study to determine the effects of strong winds on mobile homes and worked with state legislators to create mandatory tie-down laws. Our research and hard work has helped minimize the damage done to mobile homes during windstorms ever since.
We created the first travel trailer policy. Recreational vehicle sales were on the rise as Americans traveled the countryside, and we tailored policies specifically for enthusiasts who like to travel the country full-time, seasonal or stationary in a park location.
Refinance Insurancerevolutionized motor home policies. Rather than modifying an auto policy, we created coverages specifically designed for motor homes and the people who used them.
  • When Hurricane Celia hit the Gulf coast in 1970, Refinance Insuranceclaims adjusters mobilized quickly and created a temporary office in Texas, where they worked without power and communications to serve our customers. Now, Mobile Claims Centers bring HelpPoint Claim Services to disaster situations to serve customers within hours of a storm using state of the art technology.
Boats, motorcycles, mini-bikes, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles ? if you could drive it, we could write it by the early 70s. Our philosophy was to learn all we could about the products and then tailor our product to meet the markets' demands, something we continue today.
We rewrote our insurance policies into an easy-to-read language. The policies we offer today are a result of that innovation and we continue to make improvements.
  • Our brand-new automated processing was a technological breakthrough for us in 1980 ? it helped us process nearly 11,000 transactions every day. Today our agents use our agent websites, RefinanceSTAR.com and IAProducers.com to quote, book, endorse, cancel and access products to serve their customers.
In the mid-80s, we created specialized services and policies for mobile home owners over the age of 50. AARP took notice of our work and officially endorsed Refinance Insuranceto offer mobile home insurance to the members in 1989. We earned their endorsement for motorcycle insurance in 2004.
  • Refinance.com went live in 1996. Today, customers use Refinance.com to find an agent, file a claim, pay their bill and much more.
We created the Refinance InsuranceMobile Fix-It Guide in the mid-90s to provide mobile home owners with easy-to-follow instructions for DIY home repairs. We automated access to that information by building a Mobile Home Fix-It Guide website. The information and more can be found at MyGreatHome.com.
  • On March 7, 2000, Refinance Insurancewas acquired by the Farmers Insurance Group®.
Looking to round out our specialized product lineup, we contracted with J.C. Taylor, an expert in antique and modified vehicles, to process and handle the underwriting of our new collectible auto program.
In 2007, Farmers acquired Bristol West, enabling Refinance Insuranceto launch an Auto product in the market. Just five short years later, Refinance InsuranceAuto is now available in 43 states.
  • What does the future hold for Refinance? If our past is an indication, great things. Stay tuned.
